KOKORO ATLAS explains the ideas underneath everyday Japan. Not the Japan of temples and cherry blossoms, but the one you run into: the apology on the platform, the silence in the meeting, the classroom the students clean themselves.

Who this is for

People who have real contact with Japan — living here, working with Japanese colleagues, studying the language — and who keep hitting things that do not match how their own country works. If you are looking for travel tips or a spiritual retreat in prose, this is not it.

How we answer

Every article follows the same five moves: the moment you noticed something, the easy explanation and why it fails, what is actually going on, where it comes from, and where you will see it again tomorrow.

We describe the mechanism and let you judge it. A mechanism that produces something admirable usually produces a cost from the same structure, and we write both. We do not open an article by telling you whether a thing is good.

Who writes it

The editors. We do not put personal names or faces on articles, because the authority here is not supposed to come from who we are — it comes from what we cite and whether you can check it. Our sourcing rules are public, in detail, on the Sources page.
